Ice Cycle

Solo Project

Brief

The brief asks you to investigate the Craft/Artisan produce revolution as your target marketplace and design a capsule collection of vessel (for eating and drinking) that respond directly to the specifics of these products. This project will require you to understand the current market trends/designs (specially the changes to many people’s lifestyles and working patterns during and after the pandemic) to inform and develop a range of functional drinking vessel (including products for takeaway) that challenge and innovate whilst bring embedded with the brand values. The areas to consider are Artisan Coffee, Craft Beer, Spirits and Wine, healthy juice, and many more.

Ice Cycle is both a spin on the glass and the ice cube. The mould creates a beautiful cup formed of ice, in which you can pour your favourite beverage - cooling it to perfection with style. A range of ice glass holders protect fingers from getting cold and the glass from melting, whilst contributing to the stunning aesthetic of the process.

The design and making process blends the traditional craft method of moulding, with digital mould design, and 3D printing. Much inspiration is taken from pottery design due to its metaphorical associations with birthing and life. When the ice glass is placed on top of the mould as shown in image 3, it slowly melts back into the mould. This design represents the cycle of life, but also the growing requirement for circularity in design.

The design process began with sketches of form, followed by more intricate sketches related to functionality. After choosing silicone for the mould material, I used CAD to 3D model a 3-part mould for the silicone - apparently moulding moulds is real thing now. Concurrently I made the lid on CAD, taking into account the requirement for drip holes, and excess water feeds to ensure no air gaps in the glass.
